What Can a 10000 Watt Generator Run?
Check the appliances you want to keep on during an outage and see whether a 10,000 W generator can start them and keep them running together.

What can a 10,000 W generator run
E03Scenario A
On a 10,000 W generator
5,550 W to spare at the starting peak.
- Usable capacity (90%)
- 9,000 W
- Running load selected
- 1,950 W
- Peak when the largest motor starts
- 3,450 W
- Does it fit?
- Yes
Estimate. Formula and sources are under “How it works”. Change any input; the result updates as you type.
Formula
How it works
- Usable capacity = generator watts × 0.9 (we keep 10% in reserve)
- Running load = the sum of the running watts of everything you checked
- Starting peak = running load + the largest extra starting surge among the checked appliances
- It fits when the starting peak is at or below the usable capacity
Only the single largest surge is added, because motors rarely start at the same instant. If two big motors kick on together, the peak is higher: start them one at a time.

Sources: running and starting watts from manufacturer sizing tables (Generac) and DOE; motors typically draw 2–3 times their running watts to start. The 90% usable margin is our planning assumption.

Worked example
A worked example
A 10,000 W generator has about 9,000 W usable. A refrigerator, a freezer, a 1 HP well pump, a furnace fan and a 3-ton central AC run at 6,300 W together. When the AC compressor starts on top of all that, the peak reaches 9,800 W. Verdict: no, it doesn't fit as checked. Leave the well pump off while the AC runs and it does: 5,300 W running, 8,800 W peak.
Questions
FAQ
Can a 10000 watt generator run central air?
Yes, with care. A 3-ton central AC plus a refrigerator runs at 4,200 W and starts at 7,700 W, inside the 9,000 W usable. Stack a well pump, a freezer and a furnace fan on top and the start no longer fits.
Can a 10000 watt generator run a whole house?
The essentials of most homes and one big load at a time, yes. An electric water heater (4,500 W), an electric dryer (5,000 W) and central AC (3,500 W) together are over the limit before anything starts. Connecting to house wiring needs a transfer switch or an interlock installed by an electrician.
Can a 10000 watt generator run an electric dryer?
With the refrigerator, yes: 5,700 W running, 7,200 W peak. Run it when the AC and water heater are off.
Running vs starting watts: what's the difference?
Running watts are what an appliance draws once it's going. Starting watts are the brief surge a motor needs to get turning, typically 2–3 times the running figure. A generator must cover the running load plus the biggest surge.
Portable 10,000 W or a standby generator?
A portable unit needs refueling by hand: at half load a 10,000 W gasoline generator burns about 1 gal/h. A standby unit runs on propane or natural gas and starts on its own, and it has costs even when idle. Compare with the standby generator cost-to-own calculator.
